Leona Lewis was attacked during a London book signing this afternoon, reports Mashable this evening. This is of course a sad and unfortunate event, and I sincerely hope she recovers.
It is interesting to note that a statement was released by her team through Facebook, alerting her fans to what had happened.
This gets the message to the core demographic of her fans who are likely to be 12-18 year old girls, many of whom are likely to have joined her Facebook fan page.
This highlights the changing landscape of the way we communicate. Previously, a statement would have been issued to the press who would have reported on it the next day. Now in an instantaneous world, that information is in the hands of the people who care about her most, without the need for a third party to publish it.
